New Skaters and Parents. What You Need To Know

My Child Wants To Try Skating
Bring your child to a Learn to Skate Session at the Hatrick Street rink.
Coach Gary Clark will teach your child the basics of skating.
There will be skills exercises, games, races and roller hockey.
Some of the Junior Speed Skaters will be present but the emphasis is on beginners.
It is advisable to bring a cycle helmet.
Skates will be provided if required.
The session runs from 6.00pm to 8.00pm.every Thursday.
Parents are welcome to stay and watch (or join in).
lt"ll cost you S5.00 per participant per session.
My Child is Really Enjoying This And Appears Quite Capable
Your child will be invited to Jubilee Stadium to a Speed Skating training session.
This will involve training with the full Speed Skating Squad.
There will be skills training, races and endurance training.
A helmet is compulsory.
In order to get full advantage of this level of skating, speed skates will be needed. Initially some can be borrowed but you should be looking at buying a set. Coaching staff can assist in accessing a pair of these.

A Speed Skating skinsuit would be useful but not essential at this stage.

If you continue at this level you need to join the Wanganui Amateur Roller Skating Club. Annual fee is $30.00 abated over the period of the financial year left.

Regular attendance at these sessions costs $40 per term for the first person and $25 for each family member after that. This covers the hire of the stadium.
Your child (or yourself) can now race in club events and interclub omnibus events.
Sessions are from 5.15pm to 7.00pm every Tuesday.

Wow My Child is Showing Real Potential and Can Handle Skating with Senior Skaters.

Training sessions now include, in addition to Tuesday's session , outdoor or "road" sessions at venues at Mitre 10 Mega car park and Kowhai Park.

These are aimed at speed and endurance and will include long skates up to 20km as well as sprint training and interval training. Intensity will depend on where in the racing season it is.

Gloves are compulsory. Skin suits recommended.

Sessions are Wednesday nights 6.00pm to 7.30pm. (Thursday 6.00pm to 7.30pm during Nationals session) Saturday 8.00am and/or Sunday 6.00pm to 7.30pm.

The program is aimed at participation in Area's, the National Championships and the larger tours such as the Speed King Tour of Upper Hutt.
The Nationals consist of:
Road and Track (indoor) held over 10 days at New Year.
Banked Track Nationals held around February over 2 days.
The Marathon / Half Marathon held as a 1 day event.
Nationals are broken down into age groups and gender. Classes are:
        Primary. Not yet 9.
        Juvenile. Not yet 12.
        Junior. Not yet 15.
        Intermediate. Not yet 17.

In order to race these events you must be federated to the NZ Federation of Roller Sports and buy a race number. These are annual fees:

The club allocates a club skinsuit to federated members for use at large race events. This must be returned if you resign from the club. Replacements are issued if you damage or outgrow your skinsuit.
