Nyman seals spot in NZ team after 'dream run'
Iain Hyndman | Wednesday, January 4, 2012 7:33
Wanganui skater Renee Nyman is a shoo-in for selection in the New Zealand team for the Oceania Championships in April after wining two national senior titles at the New Zealand Road Championships in Timaru on Monday.
The 17-year-old, in her first season as a senior, claimed the 200m individual time trial before coming out to win the open women's 20km elimination event later in the day.
"I was stoked to win the 20km race. That's probably my forte now, although I'm racing pretty well in the sprints, too," Nyman said from Timaru yesterday.
In the 20km elimination race Nyman was sitting at the tail of the field entering the final straight, but found a dream run on the inside to claim victory.
"Twenty-eight started in the race and we were down to five for the last two laps.
"Coming into the final straight I was sitting fifth and saw a gap on the inside and sprinted."
Nyman finished third in the 1km event yesterday morning and was to race in the 10km event later in the day.
She also competes in the 500m today and the relays, but will miss the indoor rounds this coming weekend.
"I won't race in the indoor events, but I'm pretty confident they'll [selectors] include me in the New Zealand team for the Oceania Championships here in Timaru in April on my road form.
"We find out on Saturday night whether we've been selected, but it's exciting because there are more Asian and Australian teams coming this year," she said.
Nyman has ben skating since childhood and has various national titles in all grades now, including primary, juvenile, intermediate and senior.
Meanwhile, fellow Wanganui skaters Rebecca Smith, Judah Kelly, Jessica van Bentum and Monique Cleeve also fared well at the National Road Championships on Monday.
Smith and Kelly finished second and third respectively in the junior girls, while Cleeve finished third in the juvenile girls time trial and van Bentum third in the intermediate time trial.
